Periphery - the potential of freedom or a myth?

PERIPHERY - the potential of  freedom or a myth?

There is something paradoxical when we talk about periphery in the realm of space.
If we can imagine Earths sphere, the periphery that we are refering to is hard to find. Non the less if we consider that the Earth is rotating that paradox just becomes bigger. But in human mind it always exsisted and still does, inspite globalization. It has huge influence on our social status, our identity and the way we see ourselves and the people around us.
Periphery seems lightless. It is as though we are invisible, formless and are seeing things from relative distance.
But the question is, can we consider this absence as a potential freedom?
Maybe the reason for our art project is best described by Proust, when he says that only art can help us escape seeing things apart from our own mind and experiance different view at the universe.
In Iva Vranekovic case unconfortable with social environment and guided by intuition, cloth hangers go on a journey of their own. Homeless, they change their aura with every new location (Zagreb-Pula-Helsinki-Zagreb) reminding a bare human scelet, and a human habbit not to see anything that lies beneath the surface of raw human reality. Iva`s works are based on minimalistic art. Hangers, everyday object without it`s basic function becomes an enigmatic object reflecting genius loci refering to the place where artist founds herself at that certain moment.
Iva does mostly installation art where exhibition already starts with exhibition set-up. From that moment it becomes a subject of constant change. The inventory objects brought by the artist (hangers) or found accidentally and paint...everything has chance to become an equal part of the exhibition.
The sticky potential of material makes objects of Josipa Stefanec “steal” and accumulate clothes that use to belong to different persons, friends, passengers, but it also includes symbol of the famous idol (Michael Jackson). Objects become game of opposite line: anonymous and famous, male and female, purity and impurity, reality and fantasy…
It seems as though the form is built by everyday life and not the artist, feeding itself with identities who use to stay at the same space, living traces of specific place. Without it owners clothes looks a like reflections of alienated life, an argument without any understanding.
As for Snjezana Ban, the basis of her work lies on questions about identity of the artist and searching for place in art (world), in relation to predecessors and contemporaries, with an awareness of herself as someone who “comes after”.
Noting in her work the fact of Gilbert & George exhibition held in Zagreb for the first time, one can observe questioning about the role of specific place and time and the way it constructs our artistic identity. In Snjezana`s work, artistic icons Gilbert & George are left to be destroyed by moisture, which might transform them to a possible unrecognisable state. The outcome is uncertain, just like the answers to the questions on the present moment in art, which the work prompts; on the meaning of exhibiting at the time when hundreds of works are made and exhibited simultaneously, on the status of the artist – their immortality or transience…
